The Somali Regional State Journalists’ Association was established on September 9, 2014 in Jijiga.
Ali Bedel, head of the state government’s communication affairs office, who was present at the inauguration ceremony, said the administration had previously been hampered by the administration’s lack of professionalism, but now media professionals are free to work.
Ali Bedel said the government will provide the necessary support to journalists if they report in a balanced manner away from riots and conflicts.
A member of the executive committee of the Ethiopian Media Council, Tamerat Hailu, who was present at the association’s inauguration ceremony, He said the fact that the association has not been organized to protect the rights and freedoms of journalists is not too late for good.
Ato Tamerat said the Council is providing training on journalism ethics to members of the Journalist association and more than 50 media houses. As a council we are ready to work with the Somali reginal state journalist association, he add.
